Né La Thiass’ is vocalist and drummer Cheikh Lo’s debut album from 1995. He was a member of the Orchestre Volta Jazz in Senegal and performed with several mbalax bands in 1978 before striking out with this set in the mid-nineties. Hailed as an instanst classic in World Music circles ‘Né La Thiass’ glows with the warmth of a swirl of influences, a fusion of funk, jazz and indigenous sounds that also drips with the rhythms and bittersweet tones of Cuban music along with west and central African traditional sounds. Check out the urgent ‘Boul Di Tagale’, the atmospheric ‘Set’ and the driving, percussive ‘Bamba Sunu Goorgui’.
