Recorded over 4 dates in April/ May 1958, ‘New Bottle Old Wine’ is considered a ‘near-classic’. The album takes several songs associated with Jazz greats giving them distinctive arrangements by pianist Gil Evans. The album features a stellar line-up including Cannonball Adderley on alto sax, drummer Art Blakey (6 tracks), trumpeter Johnny Coles (5 tracks) and bassist Paul Chambers. The arrangements are not that different from those Evans used to enhance Miles Davis’ ‘Miles Ahead’ a couple of years before. A brooding version of ‘Round About Midnight’ and a swinging take on Dizzy Gillespie’s ‘Manteca’ are among the highlights. For lovers of Big Band Jazz, ‘New Bottle Old Wine’ is a delight.
