Vocalist/ Hammond organ player Billy Hawks recorded these two R&B orientated gems in 1967 and 1968. ‘New Genius Of The Blues’ features some furious Hammond workouts such as ‘Got My Mojo Working’, ‘Hawk’s Blues’ and a fine take of Ray Charles ‘Got A Woman’ that’s tarts off like a Motown backing track. ‘O Baby (I’m Losing You) is a classic. ‘Heavy Soul’ has some strong tunes and all-round is the strongest of the two LPs. Check ‘Whip It On Me’ and the jazzier ‘That’s Your Bag’ that sounds like a John Patton cut.
