A Night In Tunisia was recorded over two dates in August 1960; it sees Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers in top form. The version of ‘A Night In Tunisia’ is one of the most dynamic interpretations of the Dizzy Gillespie classic. Art Blakey is in thunderous mood on the opening salvo; he sounds like an entire African drum section all by himself. Then ‘A Night In Tunisia’ leads into the kind of rump rolling Hard Bop that made Blue Note world famous. ‘Sincerely Diana’ is another pulsating cut and Bobby Timmons’ ‘So Tired’ is a beautifully constructed blues with a wonderful melodic hook. Lee Morgan’s ‘Koko’s Waltz’ is a sublimely subtle waltz – apart from Art Blakey’s muscular solo. The horn line line-up of Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter excel themselves, whilst Bobby Timmons holds the keys to the rhythm section with subtle rippling riffs. ‘A Night In Tunisia’ is one of Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers essential releases.
