At 77 years old Hugh Masakela was still pushing the boundaries of the sound that he had worked with for most of his career – sadly ‘No Borders’ would be his last album as he passed away in late January, not long after the release of this album. Stylistically the album embraces ideas and melodies drawn from across the African continent with Nigerian, South African and West African influences running throughout. The lyrics are engaging and the story telling like none other – check the dreamy ‘One Of These Days’, the bluesy ‘Shuffle And Bow’, the lovely soulful ‘Been Such A Long Time Gone’ and the sassy ‘Tonight, Tonight, Tonight’. Incredible energy and leadership from a man of his years.
