Saxophonist Nubya Garcia is at the forefront of the new London Jazz movement. From her early days on Jazz Refreshed, to playing in Maisha to her critically acclaimed debut ‘Source’ Nubya has always played with great technique, tone and heart. She now releases her follow up ‘Odyssey’ and is joined by Ezra Collective keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones, bassist Daniel Casimir and Sam Jones on drums plus guests. Esperanza Spalding sings on ‘Dawn’ which features some great piano playing from Armon-Jones. Richie adds her soulful voice to ‘Set It Free’. Georgia Anne Muldrow vocalises over ‘We Walk In Gold’. ‘The Seer’ is probably the best instrumental track, an intense 5 minute workout although the jaunty almost cinematic ‘In Other Words Living’ is also very good. This album will appeal to her existing fans and maybe gain her some more, but this is serious listening music not for the groove oriented minded.
