Brand new Daptone act The Olympians (Toby Pazner) crafts 11 tracks of instrumental vigor that will appeal to fans of The Budos Band, Lee Fields and the Menahan Street Band. Taking funk as its base this cosmic themed aural landscape touches so many musical bases – the hard edged, 60s cinematic ‘Mars’ has an afro-beat feel in the horns, the multi-layered ‘Sirens Of Jupiter’ also has an African vibe mixed with a Blaxploitation sensibility, ‘Saturn’ is a pacey groover that sounds like a long lost relic from the South American Jet Set age : a spy thriller soundtrack that never was! ‘Pluto’s Lament’ sounds it could have been the backing for a Charles Bradley tune while ‘Mercury’s Odyssey’ again brings to mind the kind of minor key, sundown soul of Lee Fields. Engrossing and different and very good.
