Dexter Gordon’s ‘One Flight Up’ is the second album that he recorded for Blue Note in Paris (his seventh overall for the label), the first being ‘Our Man In Paris’. ‘One Flight Up’ was recorded on 2nd June 1964. The band is a quintet on two tracks, and on the other a quartet. The rhythm section features drummer Art Taylor, pianist Kenny Drew and Norwegian bass player Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. The eighteen minute ‘Tanya’ comprises side one of the vinyl. It is a fantastic tune, from the pen of Donald Byrd and dedicated to his daughter. It has an incessant yet a hypnotic groove. Solos from Gordon, sounding very un-Gordon like and Donald Byrd are enticing. The latter’s use of space is characteristic of Byrd’s own early/ mid 60’s albums like ‘Byrd In Flight’. Kenny Drew composed ‘Coppin The Haven’ and it has a warmth to it. Donald Byrd is again impressive. The tempo drops to deadpan for the smoky ‘Darn That Dream’. The tenor saxophonist gets inside the sentiment of the melody and wails for all he is worth. ‘One Flight Up’ is a very fine and under-rated album and in ‘Tanya’ it has one of Gordon’s finest recordings – a Blue Note masterpiece.
