Optimistics were a five-piece band out of Baltimore and their self-titled, debut and sole album was originally released in 1970 on Turbo Records. The opener ‘You Put Something New In My Life’ is a falsetto laced ballad, ‘Let’s Love’ follows a similar vein, while ‘Should I Let Myself Go’ has those Delfonics type harmonies stamped all over it. The raw funker ‘Man’ is a complete contrast: scratched in vocals, pounding drums and a rumbling bass setting it apart from the pleading ballads. The uptempo funky soul of ‘If I Could Influence Man’ is almost an answer song to the previous cut while the stunning crossover dancer ‘Say It Baby’ is the track that is sought after by soul DJs the world over. Rare on original this is your best chance of owning this one-of part of the indie-soul puzzle.
