Two live sessions – ‘Poinciana Revisited’ and ‘Freeflight’ were recorded Top Of The Village Gate (1969’ and Montreux, Switzerland (1971) respectively. Both feature trios – a setting which suits Ahmad Jamal’s energetic piano style. ‘Freeflight’ features two superb performances McCoy Tyner’s ‘Effendi’ and Jamal’s own ‘Manhattan Reflection’. ‘Poinciana Revisited’ has a more mainstream Jazz feel. His playing throughout both performances is exquisite – check the delicate ‘Poinciana’ or ‘Lament’. Jamal’s fluency in exploring a melody comes through on ‘Call Me’. ‘Poinciana Revisited’ and ‘Freeflight’ are two fine trio performances with quite distinct feels.
