Superb new album from Carolyn Malachi, ‘Rise’ sees Carolyn working in a similar style to Erykah Badu/N’Dambi – sweet, at times whispered vocals set to a contemporary soundscape that has both soul and jazz in equal measure: looking both back and into the future at the same time. ‘Blowing Smoke’ has a tough beat peppered with layered vocals and Trey Eley’s flute breathing in and out, ‘Got My Own Sound’ finds Malachi shifting and twisting through a variety of sounds while ‘Where I Come From’ recalls the best of the ‘Organic Soul’ sound of the early 2000s. ‘Primary Colour’ is a great ebbing and flowing, multifarious track that again allows Carolyn’s voice to work its magic, ‘Dwee Doh’ is more spoken word than sung but works so well with the real backing while ‘Honey Blues’ is a wonderful, laid back airy groove.
