Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin has been around awhile playing at Barack Obama’s 2009 presidential inauguration and recording sessions with Maurice Brown and Talib Kweli among others. Her Soul Squad band reflect her musical influences, James Brown, Maceo, the Meters, and Sly alongside more contemporary Hip Hop. The Funk element is prevalent on the Hip Hop tinged ‘March On’ and the infectious ‘Flashback’. ‘Stay’ is gentle and quite beautiful. Many tracks have a neo Soul feel such as ‘On The One’ and the catchy ‘Juicy’. ‘Little Children’ has a compelling funky, semi Afro Beat groove with chugging guitar and horns. ‘Rise Up’ is a varied set that contains a number of gems.
