On ‘Roll Call’, the emergence of Hank Mobley as a significant Jazz composer is blatantly obvious. Six of the seven tracks were Mobley tunes. Following on from the brilliant ‘Soul Station’ recorded nine months before ‘Roll Call’. ‘A Baptist Beat’ is a finger popping groove that has that go to church feel. ‘My Groove Your Move’ is equally infectious and always the band to stretch with a restrained Art Blakey and Paul Chambers holding the rhythm section down. Wynton Kelly’s lyrical piano, sometimes under-rated is especially evocative. The title song kicks the album off in typical Blue Note style. When this album was recorded, this writer was 4 days old; I know which one is stood the test of time better.
