‘Songs Of Experience’ was David Axelrod’s second studio album and just as in the first he composed musical interpretations of English poet William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience, an 18th-century illustrated collection of poems. This set is similar in some respects to its predecessor but maybe more folk edged with a more orchestrated cinematic feel. ‘A Poison Tree’ has a sense of foreboding in places, the drama filled ‘The Human Abstract’ has hints of what influenced contemporary composers Hampshire & Foat and rides along on a plucked bass and drum groove, while ‘The Fly’ again sounds like incidental music from a UK suspense drama. The sorrowful jazz of ‘The Sick Rose’ again melds styles together to create a soundscape that is pure Axelrod. A visionary who made both accessible and difficult music, his fans will love this.
