Spiritual Jazz 16 is a focus on Riverside and its associated sister labels. Riverside itself was founded in 1953 by Orrin Keepnews and Bill Grauer, and became an important purveyor in that decade and beyond of what would be marketed as of modern jazz. This latest volume in the excellent Spiritual Jazz series focuses on modal and spiritual Jazz tracks recorded by some of the labels biggest artists like Cannonball Adderley Sextet ‘Primitivo’ , Blue Mitchell ‘ Turqouise’ and McCoy Tyner ‘Valley Of Life’. But also checkout the excellent James Clay ‘New Dehli’, Sonny Red ‘ The Mode’ and Sal Nistico ‘Ariscene’.
