Turkish Jazz singer Yasam Hancilar and his quartet are new names to us but the tone on the opener to his ‘Strange Fish’ CD is very much familiar: there’s a distinctly Mark Murpy feel to ‘Sleepless Nights’. The groove laden ‘Soul Shadows’ is less traditional than some tracks on the album and more funky edged jazz that has a lovely open sound to it, the latin swinger ‘Vale O Escritto’ is a good dancer while ‘Empty Faces’ is a fast tempo, energetic effort that lifts the set. The ballad ‘When You Are Near’ is a beautiful, pensive moment that acts as a calm moment in the storm that surrounds it.
