Second Volume in this look at the New York Mainstream imprint and there’s a broader scope to this set.
Sugar Billy’s ‘Super Duper Love (Are You Diggin’ On Me)’ was brought to wider attention by Joss Stone, Afrique’s punchy funk dancer ‘Soul Makossa’ grabs Manu Dibango’s original and takes it into new territory while Prophecy’s rolling funker ‘Whatever’s Your Sign’ is worth a revisit. Raymond Smith offers a version of ‘Seven Day Lover’, JG Lewis ‘Let The Music Play’ has obvious Barry White influences, The Steptones deliver the excellent dancer ‘Success Don’t Come Easy, while on the slower side Saundra Phillips gives us the semi-spoken ‘I Need You Back Home’, Little Richard belts out the bluesy ‘Try to Help Your Brother’ and Darlene Jackson’s – ‘Does She (Sleep On My Side Of The Bed)’ is another semi-spoken storyline delivered in song. Great collection – lots of high points.
