After a string of funky albums recorded for Prestige Records between 1967 and 1973, guitarist Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones released ‘Sweetback’ in 1976. Like those sets, the Hammond B3 is heavily featured. It highlights Ivan’s signature quickfire delivery especially on the rapid ‘Confusion’ that became something of a cult tune on the underground Jazz dance scene. ‘Sweetback’ is a gritty organ tune that has a compulsive groove and infectious melody, again featuring Jones’ unique approach to his instrument. Equally enthralling is his version of Steve Wonder’s ‘You’ve Got It Bad Girl’ that builds towards a mighty crescendo. These three tracks are the core of this strong set whilst the more mellow tunes act more as interludes. Amazingly, given its quality, ‘Sweetback’ was his ninth and final album.
