One-time Buena Vista Social Club member Ry Cooder’s career spans over 50 years ‘The Prodigal Son’, his latest album, finds him ploughing a roots music furrow that digs deep through a selection of gospel, blues, folk and bluegrass traditionals from the likes of Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Roosevelt Graves and the Stanley Brothers among others, all the while making the music his own thanks to a life lived in the music. ‘Straight Street’ brings to mind recent Boz Scaggs, the hymnal feel of ‘Nobody’s Fault But Mine’ is bleak and evocative while his take on Graves’ ‘I’ll Be Rested When The Roll Is Called’ is a rousing blues-gospel effort. Cooder displays his worldly influences throughout this album that refuses to be pinned down to one genre.
