The Putbacks are from Melbourne and take their musical cues from (among others) David Axelrod, Lalo Schifrin, Adrian Younge and contemporary instrumental groups like BADBADNOTGOOD. The sound on their debut group album (they were Emma Donovan’s Band on her 2014 release) is definitely spaced out! Imagine a sci-fi soundtrack set mainly at hip-hop tempo with effects and echo-heavy drums throughout, sprinkle in some jazz, add a dash of funk and beat well, and you have this challenging and engaging set. tracks like ‘Oranges’ and ‘Straight’ are full on cosmic soundscapes, the beat heavy ‘Drones’ is a great, uptempo number, the jazzy ‘non Man No’ is a warm, brooding number while the lazy ‘The Ways’ features Bilal. Different. Very different.
