‘The Sermon’ is one of the definitive Jimmy Smith albums.  Released late 1959, it was recorded in the same two sessions that had produced Smith’s previous Blue Note release ‘House Party’, namely 25th August 1957 and 25th February 1958.  The only musician other than Smith present at both sessions was a young trumpeter named Lee Morgan. The twenty-minute ‘The Sermon’ from the February ’58 sees tenor man Tina Brooks and alto saxophonist join the horn line all three making telling contributions.  Add Art Blakey to the mix and a fine solo from guitar maestro Kenny Burrell and ‘The Sermon’ cooks, a slow burner of a blues that has that finger popping groove. And no one could testify at the Hammond quite like Jimmy!  Smith composed both ‘The Sermon and ‘J.O.S’.  The latter is from the August 1957 date.  Don Bailey is on drums, Eddie McFadden on guitar, George Coleman on alto sax.  Coleman and Morgan deliver impassioned statements over a fast-paced rhythm delivered by Smith and Bailey.  McFadden’s solo is fluid in a Grant Green kind of way.  From the 1958 recording, ‘Flamingo’ features the quartet of Smith, Morgan, Burrell and Blakey.  It is a haunting tune that contrasts with the intensity of the albums other two tracks.  Morgan and Burrell’s solos show a deft touch and beautiful simplicity, which is remarkable in such young men – Morgan was just 19 at the time.  ‘The Sermon’ is classic Smith, classic Hammond from Blue Note.
