‘The Squirrel’ is a live album recorded at the Jazzhus Montmartre club in Copenhagen on 29th June 1967. This Danish radio station recording remained in the can until 1997 when it received a CD release on Blue Note and is now out on double vinyl. Legendary tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon is joined by drummer Art Taylor, pianist Kenny Drew, and Danish bassist Bo Stief. It features four elongated tracks starting with a blistering Hard Bop interpretation of Tadd Dameron’s ‘The Squirrel’. Gordon’s catchy ‘Cheese Cake’ is another fiery performance that emphasises the saxophonist’s Hard Bop roots. The standard ballad ‘You’ve Changed’ slows the tempo and the soulfulness of the leader’s saxophone is there for all to hear. The album’s finale is a cooking take on the Sonny Rollins classic ‘Sonnymoon For Two’ that flies along at breakneck speed. This live set is not a just a must for Dexter Gordon fans, but a fine exhibition of 60’s Hard Bop. Gordon’s playing underlines just why many consider him to be one of the finest Jazz tenor players of all-time and the support form Taylor and Drew is of the highest calibre.
