Welcome return from the New Mastersounds, ‘Therapy’ marks their 9th studio album and the trademark NMS sound is there from the off with the rasping ‘Old Man Noises’, a scintillating, driving instrumental with plenty of swirling organ work that is reminiscent of their early singles on the Deep Funk label. The set is a real mixed bag, though, showing off their diverse tastes and influences: one minute you have the Grant Green-esq guitar of ‘Morning Fly’, the next the wonderful uptempo, modern, folky soul-jazz groove of ‘I Want You To Stay’. ‘Monday Meters’ does exactly what it says in the title and could have come out of ‘Nawlins circa 1969, ‘Stop This Game’ is a blue-eyed, early 70s sounding West Coast uptempo dancer that again stretches the album into a new direction. ‘Treasure’ is a wonderful ender: a bright and breezy handclapper with Eddie Robert’s guitar at the forefront underpinned by a solid beat and organ lines. Really, really good album – their best for some time.
