Soul stalwart Bettye Lavette returns after a 3 year break with an album of Bob Dylan covers in the form of ‘Things Have Changed’. Her cracked vocals – that often threaten to collapse – are perfectly suited to the material here and the arrangements – especially on the ominous blues of the title track – are superb. The ballad ‘It Ain’t Me Babe’ is pure southern while the socio-political ‘Political World’ is re-imagined as a mid 70s slab of Chi-town funk. The sneaking Memphis groove of ‘Seeing The Real You At Last’ has an infectious foot tapping groove while Dylan’s classic ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’ is totally reworked to the point that it’s almost a different song! The restrained, percussion lead ‘What Was It You Wanted’ is a funky blues stunner while the stripped back ‘Going, ,Going, Gone’ is soul, blues and gospel rolled into one unforgettable mix. Great album!
