Eclectic 5th studio album from the soulful voiced Brit singer Alice Russell, ‘To Dust’ expands upon the new funk sound that fans of Kylie Auldist and Ruby Velle will be familiar with and takes it into less retro territory whilst still retaining the vintage feel in the production. Vocally ‘Heartbreaker’ has an almost Joss Stone feel to it: raw drums, marching tempo, swirling organ and Alice’s pleading vocals making it the track of the album. ‘Hard and Strong’ is a forceful, swaggering uptempo dancer that may see crossover action, whilst the title track ‘To Dust’ is dark, sparse and moody. ‘I Loved You’, ‘Twin Peaks’ and ‘Let Go’ are also standouts on an album that refuses to stick to the tried and tested nu-funk style. Interesting grower of an album to be enjoyed in its entirety with an open mind.
