“ULTRA HIGH FREQUENCIES: THE CHICAGO PARTY” focuses on the short lived but high energy club night hosted in the Windy City’s ‘The CopHerBox II’ venue in 1982 by entrepreneurial visionaries Willie Woods and James Christopher who saw their multi-disciplined parties broadcast on local TV. While never competing with Philly or New York for national success on the disco front Chicago was still able to take the disco sound and give it a Chi-Town twist. Donnell Pitman’s ‘Love Explosion’ took Ripple’s ‘beat Goes On’ and soul-i-fied it, Magnum Force’s ‘Girl You’re Too Cool’ is a slick boogie winner, Yvonne Gage’s ‘Garden Of Eve’ is an emphatic disco winner for grown-ups, Rahmlee’s ‘Think’ is a soulful delight while Central Power System’s ‘Master’s Plan’ is a turn of the 80s indie winner and long sought after by Modern Soul fans. Closencounter’s private press modern ‘Let Yourself Go’ is a highlight for fans of low budget local-soul, I.N.D’s ‘Into New Dimensions’ is a mid tempo antidote to the harder dance tracks while Ken Allison’s Freedom (Sweet) Freedom is a gorgeous, breezy 1980 ballad. Strong comp. The DVD contains 23 musical performances, a brief documentary on the scene, and a 100-minute Chicago Party video mixtape. Excellent stuff!
