Ever the experimentalist, Meshell Ndegeocello continues to push boundaries, this time with an inventive 11 track set of covers of R&B radio hits ranging from 1982 – 1994 on ‘Ventriloquism’. The punchy ‘I Wonder If I Take You Home’ (originally by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam) shows how much she crafts it into something familiar yet brand new, her cover of Al B Sure’s ‘Nite And Day’ transforms it in a dreamy soul ballad while Ralph Tresvant’s ‘Sensitivity’ is stripped of its New Jack clock and redressed as a finger clicking, foot tapping groover. The Force MD’s ‘Tender Love’ is treated to a fitting semi-acoustic reworking while the harsh electro programming of The System’s ‘Don’t Disturb This Groove’ gives way to a lush, whispered cosmic balladry. ‘Private Dancer’ is given a portentous film score feel while ‘Smooth Operator’ is given a funk twist that works. Good album.
