These gems were ‘discovered’ in Roy Ayers’ attic. BBE released this selection back in 2005 as a result of the discoveries of those tapes, whose tunes never received a contemporary release. Volume 2 opens with the Martin Luther King tribute ‘Holiday’. The gritty ‘Funk In The Hole’ is a heavy-duty Ayers groove, whereas ‘Tarzan’ is a funky dancer complete with a repetitive and infectious keyboard riff and light-hearted chant. The horn drenched ‘I Like The Way You Do it To Me’ is fast paced and graced by Merri Clayton’s powerful vocals as is the equally quick ‘Touch Of Class’. ‘Kwajilori’ is a compulsive groove with a superb guitar lick. This 13-track compilation concludes with a demo version of his classic ‘(Everybody Loves The) Sunshine’. Volume 2 nearly reaches the heights of the first release, which is a very high bar indeed. Superb.
