These gems were ‘discovered’ in Roy Ayers’ attic. BBE released this selection back in 2003 as a result of the discoveries of those tapes, whose tunes never received a contemporary release. Volume 1 features some typically infectious Ayers Jazz Funk grooves, for example the compilations’ openers ‘Boogie Down’ and ‘What’s The T’. The compelling, and riff laden ‘Sugar’ is a standout, whilst the instrumental ‘Green And Gold’ features Pleasure’s core rhythm section and Bobby Lyle on piano and is another highlight with its slowish Funk fuelled tempo. The sleek ‘I did It In Seattle’ is wickedly funky and under-stated. There is a vocal version of Roy’s classic ‘Mystic Voyage’ that is completely different from the original. There are some superb vocal contributions from Carla Vaughn, Syvia Cox and Merry Clayton, three of the finest female singers to record with Roy Ayers. That the 13 tracks never made an album is reflection of the depth of Roy’s genius.
