Japanese Trumpeter Takuya Kuroda follows up his impressive debut Blue Note album ‘Rising Son’ of 2014 with possible an even better album ‘Zigzagger’ for the Concord label. His confidence as a leader is illustrated by better and longer Solo’s on several tracks. ‘Zigzagger’ and ‘Think Twice’ have an Afrobeat influence, but within a Jazz context. ‘Red Spade Black Diamond’ has a laid back funky approach, whilst the groover ‘Thirteen’ is more full on funky Jazz. ‘Do They Know’ is a vocal cut with a D’Angelo influence, and ‘I Don’t remember how it began’ has a heavier backbeat. Nice album.
