Album Of The Day | Leon Thomas – Full Circle (BGP)

Full Circle (pre-order due 30th June)

Leon Thomas had one of the most unique voices in Jazz music. He was at his best when stretching boundaries as he had previously with Pharoah Sanders. Full Circle from 1973 was his 6th and final album for Flying  Dutchman, and contains some of his finest tracks, supported by an impressive cast of musicians. At this time he was a member of Santana and the album includes one if Carlos tracks, Just In Time To See The Sun. It is a soulful funky Jazz dancer featuring Pee Wee Ellis on Soprano Sax, Jimmy Owens on Trumpet, Richard Davis on Bass and Joe Beck on Guitar. Its My Life I’m Fighting For is a 10 minute epic of highly percussive funky Jazz. Neil Creque wrote the track and plays great electric piano joined by Owens trumpet, and Joe Farrell on flute, Davis on Bass with great percussion from Richard Landrum and Sonny Morgan. Balance Of Life (Peace Of Mind) is another very percussive track with most of the same musicians that really needs to be heard loud to be fully appreciated. Thomas vocalises, yodels and improvises throughout. The Album also includes some string laden covers of contemporary Soul cuts like Leon Ware Wanna Be Where You are, but Thomas a larger than life character is at his best on the edge.
