Webster Lewis – Give Me Some Emotion | Album Of The Day

A compilation of Webster Lewis’ Epic years works from 1976-1981, featuring an exclusive 12-page booklet written by Will Fox with insights from legendary jazz DJ Patrick Forge. Featuring the anthems Barbara Ann and El Bobo and rare unreleased takes Japanese Umbrella and Boston. Jazz-funk, disco, fusion and soul sounds from lesser known American producer, arranger and keys player Webster Lewis. “Emblematic of the period where major labels had money to throw at productions helmed by session men, analogue studios were a sign of the times and high-quality musicians were in unfettered supply: such is Webster Lewis’ music. Luscious, well-produced and...

Webster Lewis – Complete Liner Notes from Give Me Some Emotion (Long Read)

Webster Samuel Lewis Jr was born 1st September 1943 to Webster S. Lewis Sr. and Virgie Gaines Lewis in Baltimore, Maryland. From a young age, Lewis’ talent was self-evident and, with the encouragement of his family, he would be put on an inexorable path to a long and fruitful musical career. Lewis lived a full life of music, although he didn’t see the commercial success that he arguably deserved during his tenure as a bandleader: he was not a front man of his day and much of music became better known retrospectively. Aside from his sideman duties with the likes...

Carmichael Musiclover – Black Elvis part 1 & 2 | Album Of The Day

Carmichael musiclover is probably the most consistent and persistent Soul/R&B recording artist over the past decade. He returns with an Epic 'Black Elvis' split across two parts. Vol 1 includes thirteen tracks of mainly mid tempo soul and slow jams with song titles starting in the first half of the alphabet. 'All Over Your Body' has a D'Angelo influence, whilst the smooth 80s/90s soul 'Carefree' gives a nod to Will Downing. The down tempo slow jams 'Don't Say A Word' 'Holla' and 'Empowering Me' are complemented by the 2 stepper 'Happy'.  Nice soulful grooves highlighting Carmichael's voice throughout. Carmichael musiclover...

Pucho and his Latin Soul Brothers – Super Freak | Album Of The Day

The opening track on 1972's Super Freak is a brilliant, nearly side-long medley of three tracks from Curtis Mayfield's Superfly: the title track, "Pusherman," and, of course, "Freddie's Dead." Heavy, druggy, and psychedelic, with thick organ and wah-wah guitars, the medley sounds more like the psychedelic soul of War or even Funkadelic than the sparkling Latin jazz of Pucho's earlier albums. The rest of Super Freak is a little lighter in tone, but this is still the most groove-oriented and least overtly Latin jazz-oriented of this group's albums, trafficking instead in shuffling grooves like "Oak Hurst's Art" and vibes-led ballads like "Judy's Moods" and "One...

Joe Bataan – Salsoul | Album Of The Day

Joe Bataan’s classic 1973 studio album Salsoul was a genre defining freshman release on the fledgling Salsoul label, which Bataan started after growing disagreements and accusations of financial mismanagement led him to a less than amicable split with the Fania label to which he had been signed to since 1966. Salsoul, the title of the album and the label, is literally an amalgam of two genres of music, salsa and soul, musical styles that Bataan soaked up during his youth in New York’s Spanish Harlem. Bataan would later go on to have a best-selling single on Salsoul in 1979 entitled...

Takuya Kuroda is a highly respected trumpeter and arranger born in Kobe, Japan and based in New York City. ‘Midnight Crisp‘ is Takuya’s seventh studio album, entirely self-produced and following 2020’s highly acclaimed ‘Fly Moon Die Soon‘, also released on UK label First Word (winner of the Worldwide Award’s Label of the Year in 2019). Consisting of six new tracks, this once again sees Takuya displaying his unique hybrid sound, blending soulful jazz, funk, post-bop, fusion and hip hop.   After following the footsteps of his trombonist brother playing in big bands, he relocated to New York to study jazz...
