‘This Close To You’ was the second album that Luther released on the Cotillion label dating from 1977. As you would expect from the time the arrangement by Paul Riser and the production are lush with strings and many great musicians but the highlight is of course Luther’s voice which even this early in his career is highly distinctive. The highlight is the modern soul dancer ‘Don’t Wanna Be A Fool’ a wonderful slice of upper mid tempo 70s Soul. ‘Follow My Love’ is a nice mid tempo floater, and ‘Come Back To Love’ and ‘Don’t Take The Time’ are strong ballads. The two Cotillion albums are half a decade before Luther Vandross hit the big time with ‘Never Too Much’ but are very worthy albums and essential to any Luther fans, thankfully issued on CD and reissued on Vinyl for the first time since their original release.
