Al Jarreau – singer, songwriter, performer extrordinaire and absolute gentleman passes

Sadly, yet another Soul/ Jazz superstar has passed away.  The legendary Al Jarreau died on Sunday 12th February.  He was 76.  Jarreau was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 12th March 1940.  The fifth of six children, he was the son of a church minister and a church pianist.   A church in which he and his family sung together.   He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and then a Master’s degree in vocational rehabilitation at the University of Iowa.  At the same time, Jarreau performed as a vocalist at various local Jazz clubs.  By the mid 60’s,...

New releases and Pre-orders | 10th February 2017

NEW RELEASES It is the best week of the year so far for releases. Ropeadope have 3 really good new albums, Nate Smith delivers a lovely Jazz album with vocal tracks, Nicolas Payton has created an excellent deep jazz album in Afro Caribbean mix tape, and trumpeter David Weiss a good modal and hard bop set. There is  also another good set from Jeremy Pelt and  great tribute to Eddie Palmieri from Charlie Sepulveda both on High note. Inner City Records Special

Inner City Records was a jazz record company and label founded by Irv Kratka in 1976 in New York City. The company was a division of Music Minus One and also owned the label Classic Jazz. It started with reissues, then moved on to new recordings covering various types of jazz. Inner City Records released over 60 albums between 1976 and 1980 and was voted the 1979 Record Label of the Year in the International Jazz Critics Poll. This new series of reissues sees many on CD for the first time.

NEW RELEASES The Aaron Abernathy album is now out on Vinyl, and Ola Onabule's great  'It's Peace that deafens' is finally available from us on CD. REISSUES The big news of the week is a batch of CD titles from the great Inner City label., with some great fusion albums from Judy Roberts, Michal Urbaniak etc, which have not been available on CD before.
