New Releases, Reissues and Restocks | Friday 2nd August

This week we have a new album from renowned musician and composer Meshell Ndegeocello, an incredibly diverse and ambitious album and a clear continuation of her genre-defying sound. There's a great Soul Compilation on Charly title 'Rare Soul Uncovered' and also Mr Bongo are back with another great reissue of the cuban album 'Los Reyes 73'. Albums Of The Day | Lee Morgan, Bobby Hutcherson Tone Poets

For today's feature we wanted to draw your attention to 2 brilliant Tone Poets that are out tomorrow. Bobby Hutcherson's 'Medina' is an outstanding album recorded in 1969 includes a stellar lineup comprised of Stanley Cowell, Reggie Johnson, Joe Chambers and Harold Land. Previously unreleased, this album came first out on a Japanese CD in 1980. It sits on the heavier side of Hutcherson's work and features two originals each from Chambers, Cowell, and Hutcherson.  Each track brings with it its own compositional complexities and deftness typifying much of the music of the period. An open and adventurous record that...

Album Of The Day | Resolution 88 – Vortex

Resolution 88 are one of the tightest funky jazz bands in the UK. 'Vortex', their fourth self-produced and released album is one of their strongest. Tom O'Grady is a masterful keyboard player, obviously heavily influenced by Herbie Hancock and he displays his talents on this great album playing Rhodes, Clavinet, ARP Odyssey, Roland and Oberheim amongst other keyboards. The title track 'Vortex' is an eight minute voyage of discovery that starts off from a moody, atmospheric intro featuring Tom Smith on Bass Clarinet intro, then changes pace into a frantic groove with Smith changing to Tenor and Soprano and keyboard...

New Releases, Reissues and Restocks | Friday 26th July

At the top of the list for new releases this week is the new album 'Vortex' from UK group Resolution 88. The album is a wonderful mix of jazz-funk/fusion, and in many ways seems like a tribute to those classic 70s albums we know and love but with a fresh approach, a stand out track being 'Love Will Come Around' featuring the stellar vocals of Vanessa Hayes. We have the new album from Cornell CC Carter on Expansion Records, a top album from one of the finest voices in contemporary soul, and also Bette Smith's album Goodthing is now available...

Album Of The Day | Cornell CC Carter – Expressions Of Soul

Cornell CC Carter hails from San Francisco, and processes a really soulful voice. His music recalls an earlier age of soul music with a good time feel. His fifth album ‘Expressions Of Soul’ is one of his strongest to date. ‘The Change’ is a memorable upper mid tempo 80s style Soulful song that grooves along nicely. ‘Everyday’ ‘Holding Back’ ‘Its So Nice’ and ‘Sometimes’ (with Brian Power) are good contemporary dancers with a hint of The 80s. The cover of Marvin ‘Come Get To This’ and the mid tempo floater ‘Never Gonna Waste It’ feature Eddie M on sax. The...
