The album includes the modern soul gems ‘What Do You Want Me To Do’, ‘I Don’t Want Nobody else’, ‘I’m in need of love’ and ‘The Common broken Heart’. The Philly inspired up tempo cuts ‘I Will if You Will’ and ‘Somebody new is Lovin on you’ plus there are some...
One of our favourite singers Ledisi returns with a superb tribute to Dinah Washington - one of the most sassy of Jazzy Soul singers from the 50s and early 60s Ledisi reveals the true beauty of her voice in this setting accompanied by great musicians, recalling an era of great songs and arrangements. 'What a difference a day made', 'If I Never Get To Heaven', 'You Don't Know What Love Is' are great laid back tunes. 'Caravan" and 'You Got What It Takes' (ft Gregory Porter) really swing along. Ledisi is best known as a soul singer but this album,...
The popular and excellent 'Soul On The Real Side' compilation series returns with volume 16, featuring another 20 Modern and Northern Soul tracks. Northern classics include Ohio Players 'I Gotta Get Away', Don Varner 'When It's Over' and Tony Owens 'All that matters'. A nice comp - click on the product to hear some of the tracks and check out some of the others in the...
There are some great new releases, reissues and compilations this week. First up our good friend Ledisi is back with a new album, an excellent tribute to Dinah Washington illustrating the beauty of her voice, available on CD and LP, and including a duet with Gregory Porter. The popular 'Soul on the Real Side' returns with volume 16, featuring 20 Modern and Northern soul tracks. Bobby Hutcherson's superb Latin-Fusion album 'Montara' gets a Blue Note Tone Poet 180gm analogue release. John Coltrane's spiritual epic 'A Love Supreme' also gets an analogue 180gm release of the rare Mono version. Tramp's interesting...
Vibes player Bobby Hutcherson recorded 22 albums for the Blue Note label between 1965 and 1977. His 13th, 'Montara' was released in 1975 and marked first full Latin Jazz album. One of his finest ever albums, containing seven great tracks and featuring a stellar cast of musicians, including Ernie Watts, Harvey Mason, Ralph McDonald, Blue Mitchell, Oscar Brashear, Larry Nash plus Latin stalwarts Eddie Cano, Bobby Matos, Willie Bobo and many others. 'Camel Rise' was written by George Cables - a lovely fusion song with a driving rhythm given a Latin makeover (Freddie Hubbard also recorded a great version around...
Ronnie McNeir's debut album for RCA was released in 1972, produced by Mickey Stevenson. The 12 tracks (10 on LP) on 'Makes A Move' are from the same sessions but were unreleased at the time. 'Let's Make A Move' is an uptempo semi funky groove that would appeal to the 70s Modern Soul scene. 'I'm Sorry' is a more straightforward modern soul dancer. There is a nice version of the Temptations/Norman Whitfield 'Girls Alright With Me'. 'My Day Will Come' is a nice mid tempo floater. 'Say You' starts off with the intro later used on 'Summertime', then develops into a nice upper...

Today's album of the day is the latest release from trumpeter Theo Croker, 'Dream Manifest'. Croker has made many ground-breaking albums, and this one pushes the boundaries between Jazz, Soul and Hip Hop further than ever before. ‘High Vibrations’ is an up-tempo vocal track featuring Malaya and D’Leau. ‘Slowly’ is a mid tempo groove ft Ego Ella May, whilst Estelle features on the more down tempo ‘One Pillow’. The atmospheric instrumental ‘Crystal Waterfalls’ reminds us from where Theo came from on his journey. A truly varied and interesting album. This is a very limited release so grab your copy while...
