‘6 Pieces Of Silver’ was recorded on November 10th 1956; by which time, Horace Silver had already carved himself a discernible niche in the Jazz world.  His brand of infectious and happy Hard Bop with a Latin influence proved highly popular.  The quintet assembled for this session sees with fellow (recent) members of the Jazz Messengers – Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley and Doug Watkins joined by an up and coming young drummer Louis Hayes.  There are two tracks where the horns sit it out and are thus trio pieces.  The typically ebullient ‘Cool Eyes’ starts the album in uplifting mood and there is that characteristic humour to the melody lines that was to stay with Silver his entire recording career. The first of the trio tracks is the slow brooding yet haunting ‘Shirl’ and shows another dimension to Silver’s composing brilliance, whilst the delicacy of his playing manifests itself especially in the closing couple of bars that are stunningly beautiful.  ‘Camouflage’ has a cheeky melody with enticing horn line and boogie-woogie style piano. The mysterious ‘Enchantment’, after its bluesy intro, develops into a Latin themed groove.   Mobley’s soulful tenor opens with a typically heart-felt statement.  Byrd follows with a rich warm contribution too, before Silver brings it home.  The album’s outstanding track is ‘Senor Blues’ that has an unusual time signature and a captivating theme.  It has become a Jazz standard and covered frequently, but this original remains the most compelling version.  The album concludes with ‘For Heaven’s Sake’ the second trio performance; and Silver captures its beautiful melody and mood perfectly.
