Debut set under his chosen moniker for the Maddjazz label, Henry Keen’s ‘70s Baby’ is a tour de force of pacey, spacey jazz as heard in the title track as well as a multitude of influences. The twisted afro-funk of ‘darboukafrique, the chilled jazz inflected groves of ‘Flow London’ and the broken beat of ‘Gotta Step’ highlight the varied directions of this highly accomplished set. ‘Brotherly Love’ has a lovely spiritual vibe, ‘Miriam’s Funk’ is a heavily percussive, hypnotic groove that has African influences while the sparse nu-jazz of ‘Strange Way To Play’ harks back to the best of the West London sound. ‘Turn Of The Season’ closes the album out with the full melting pot of ideas mixing and blending together to wrap up this superb set.
