Esther Phillips possessed one of our music’s most distinctive voices, this 2 CD, 33 track anthology documents her work for the Kudu label – probably her most productive period. Her pained interpretation of Gil Scott Heron’s ‘Home Is Where The Hatred Is’ stands out as probably the greatest version of this song. Try too the Disco classic ‘What A Difference A Day Makes’ and her version of ‘All The Way Down’. Bill Withers ‘Use Me’ and ‘Justified’ are given the Esther treatment. Other gems include ‘From A Whisper To A Scream’, ‘I’ve Never Found A Man’ and the under-rated ‘I Feel The Same’.
