Fourth album from critically acclaimed Manchester trio GoGo Penguin, ‘A Humdrum Star’ is anything but that with this set yet another superb collection of ambient electronica, Jazzscapes and beat heavy fusion. The opener ‘Prayer’ slowly unfolds builds and suggests a glacial tension lying just under the surface, the urgent ‘Raven’ takes flight on a rapid fire breakbeat while ‘Bardo’ has a funk swagger underscored by the piano reverb. The wonderful, live feel of ‘Hundred Moons’ embellishes the journeying, spiritual vibe, the frenetic ‘Transient State’ is a high octane piano and drums duel while ‘Return To Text’ has an almost classical feel blended with a deep jazz understanding. ‘Window’ again revels in the flourishes of keys and beats on this superb album.
