Third album from Solange Knowles (Beyonce’s sister) and her first for eight years, there’s a maturity and integrity about the album both musically and lyrically. The opener ‘Rise’ sets the tone in both respects: poetically tight and musically understated but engaging. Band leader Raphael Saadiq lends his touch to the set and there’s a warmth and richness to the production. ‘Weary’, ‘Cranes In The Sky’ and the taut groove of ‘Don’t You Wait’ are strong highlights. The pulsating, stripped back ‘Where Do We Go’ has echoes of Minnie Ripperton in the delivery, the warped dancer ‘Junie’ is a real grower while the sassy ‘Don’t Touch My Hair’ is another strong track that shows that less is more. Good album.
