‘Africa Brass’ is a brilliant album, and this writer’s favourite John Coltrane album of all-time. The version of ‘Greensleeves’ is amazing with Coltrane and McCoy Tyner stretch out on this traditional English folk song. ‘Africa’ the track features amazing brass arrangements from Eric Dolphy and Coltrane’s tenor is deep and soulful. I would recommend the Complete Africa Brass Sessions, this double CD has alternate versions of ‘Africa’ and ‘Greensleeves’ plus the driving ‘Song Of The Underground Railroad’ on which the principles of Coltrane’s vertical improvisation is perfected by ‘Trane and Tyner. It includes the tracks that were featured on the seventies release ‘Africa Brass Volume 2’. Essential Coltrane.
