One of Hard Bop most rhythmic and toughest pianists, Harold Mabern is most famous for a series of albums for Prestige in the early 60s and for session work on many Blue Note LPs. The 79 year old excels on the Hank Mobley-ish Hard Bop of ‘The Chief’. ‘Afro Blue’ is attacked at break neck pace with Gregory Porter delivering an outstanding performance. As he does on ‘The Man From Hyde Park’. Norah Jones is equally powerful on ‘Fools Rush in’. Kurt Elling sings, scats and swings on ‘Billies Bounce’. Awesome set from start to finish. (LP)
