‘Alive’ was Grant Green’s first live album (from 1970). It was recorded at the Cliché Lounge in New Jersey and features his regular band of Idris Muhammad (drums), William Bivens (vibes), Neal Creque or Ronnie Foster (organ) and Claude Bartee (tenor saxophone) plus local conga player Joseph Armstrong. It is an extremely funky set. ‘Alive’ starts with starting with a cooking and funky take on Kool And The Gang’s ‘Let The Music Take Your Mind’. Creque’s ‘Time To Remember’ is more reflective. The 11-minute version of ‘Sookie Sookie’ powers along and is a Jazz dance classic. The slowish ‘Down Here On The Ground’ gives Grant Green a chance to show his bluesy side. ‘Alive’ is a great Grant Green album and a wonderful live performance.
