The Temptations recorded the appropriately titled ‘Masterpiece’ in 1973. It is one of the best albums to be produced by Norman Whitfield and has arrangements by Paul Riser.
When it was released it was one of the first albums to make an immediate impact as buying 45s was the norm in ’73.
The title track is indeed a ‘Masterpiece’ a message song rolling along for thirteen and a half minutes, with a great dramatic musical backing, that just keeps building, the group singing in between. ‘Law Of The Land’ , ‘Plastic Man’ and ‘Ma’ are good funky soul tracks which Whitfield also recorded with other groups. The Goffin/King ballad ‘Hey Girl (I like your style)’ provides a nice contrast. The Temptations at that time was Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Dennis Edwards, Richard Street and Damon Harris and they are in great form throughout the album. Essential classic early 70s Soul music.
