Pianist Richard Sears enlists the help of legendary stickman Albert ‘Tootie’ Heath on ‘Altadena’ for this superb album that brushes free jazz with improvisation, hard bop with spiritual. Consisting of five parts this suite leads us from the high octane ‘Part One’ – a fierce jazz dancer’ through several shades and tempos that grow and build as the performance slowly unfurls. Commissioned by the Los Angeles Jazz Society all five of the tracks here were composed by Sears and it’s incredible to think that Heath is now in his eighties and still producing the kind of musical energy of a man a quarter of his age! Excellent stuff and a must for fans of Hard Bop/Free.
