Mandrill is one of our music’s under-rated but seminal bands. In the early 70’s though, the likes of Funkadelic and Earth Wind And Fire opened for them. The mix of Funk, Soul, Jazz Afro and Latin earned them the title of the black Santana, but the sound with those horns was actually pretty unique. This 31 track anthology is comprehensive. Funk cuts like ‘Hang Loose’, ‘Fencewalk’ and ‘Mango Meat’ are highlights. More Disco Orientated tunes like ‘Funky Monkey’ and ‘Can You Get It’ sit alongside Soul tunes like ‘Too Late’. More esoteric tunes such as the beautiful ‘Moroccan Nights’ and the eclectic Afro/ Latin groove of ‘Mandrill’ are favorites as are the more enigmatic ‘Lord Of The Golden Baboon’ and ‘Children Of The Sun’.
