Keyboardist Robert Glasper is regarded as one of the leading Jazz players of his generation. The Robert Glasper Experiment were responsible for the two Grammy winning Black Radio vocal albums. On Art Science the band members Sax man Casey Benjamin, Bassist Derrick Hodge , Drummer Mark Colenburg and Glasper sing, using vocoders in places. ‘Thinkin About you’, ‘No One like you’ and ‘Let’s Fall In Love’ have that Glasper trademark mid/down tempo Soul/Jazz sound. ‘You and Me’ is a slow jam and ‘Hurry Slowly’ has Steely Dan and Stevie influences. ‘Day to Day’ is an up tempo Disco-Funk cut with a catchy hook. ‘Tell Me A Bedtime Story’ is an excellent version of Herbie Hancock’s classic, the albums standout track featuring a vocoder vocal followed by some great keyboard playing from Glasper and inventive drumming from Colenburg. ‘In My Mind’ is another good instrumental that allows the band to stretch out.
This is a good album that will please Glaper fans.
