Jazz guitarist Steve Khan returns with a set full of latin flavours in the form of ‘Backlog’. Fusing his upfront guitar with polyrhythmic afro-cuban percussion and Randy Becker’s trumpet ‘Criss Cross’ is a pacey opener that engages well. ‘Head Start’ is another full sounding dancer with vibes thrown into the mix, ‘Rojo’ has a deft swagger underpinned by a snappy congo rhythm, Bob Mintzer’s sax weaves in and out of the percussion traffic on ‘Invisible’ and sounds like a late 70s downtown jazz cut while ‘Go Home’ has a harder sound with Khan’s guitar switched the blues mode above the multi-layered backing.
