Whilst John Coltrane’s work is best known for its intensity and depth, he was also capable of expressing love and tenderness through his music. ‘Ballads’ is an album of such beauty that John’s tenor glows like beacon in the darkest night. He is joined by his regular quartet on seven of the tracks with Reggie Workman replacing Jimmy Garrison on bass on ‘It’s Easy To Remember’. ‘Nancy (With the Smiling Face)’, ‘Say It (Over And Over Again)’ and ‘You Don’t Know What Love Is’ are eternally memorable Coltrane performances. ‘Ballads’ shows a different and particular side to Coltrane’s musical legacy
